Similarities and differences essay

THE BATTLE OF CHARACTERISTICS BETWEEN TWO MAIN CHARACTERS

Do you think that the main characters from two short stories ‘Lady or The Tiger’ and ‘Death by Scrabble’, which are the young man and husband show similar or distinct characteristics? The main character’s characteristic in the short story ‘Lady or The Tiger’, which is the young man’s characteristic is compared with the characteristic of another main character from a different short story, ‘Death by Scrabble’, which is the husband. The similarities and differences between these two characters are shown in the following paragraphs.
There are a few similarities between the young man and the husband. They are main characters coming from different short stories with different background yet they have many similarities. Their first similarity is that they are both adult males. This fact is undeniable as it is stated clearly in the short story itself. Their second similarity is that they are both very sophisticated characters. The young man plays a major role as the ‘accused’ one when he was caught for falling in love with the king’s daughter and this causes him to have a very sophisticated character. The husband on the other hand plays and important role throughout the whole game as a man who desires the outside world and wants to end the game quickly without having to lose to his wife. Their third similarity is that they are both brave men. This is shown by the young man when he bravely enters the arena instead of cowardly hiding in the shadows of the arena. Similarly, the husband is brave enough to cheat against his wife in a game of scrabble although his wife had been playing the game very sincerely.
In direct correlation to the above, there are many differences between the young man and the husband too. For instance, the husband is a married man whereas the young man is still single. The truth of this statement can be seen from their name itself, the word ‘husband’ represents a married man whereas the calling ‘young man’ shows a young and unmarried bachelor. Also, the young man loves the princess while the husband hates his wife. They are different in terms of caring for their partner, the young man falls in love with the princess in the story and the husband expresses his hatred towards his wife all the way through the story. Another difference is that the young man’s fate is determined by the princess whereas the husband’s fate is determined by the board game ‘Scrabble’. In the young man’s story, he is stuck in the arena and it is up to the princess to show him the door that she chooses whereas in the husband’s story, the board game ‘Scrabble’ was jinxed and when the game ended with the word ‘DEATH’, the husband started choking on a word tile he was chewing and eventually died.
In a nutshell, there are many similarities and differences between the two characters which are the young man from ‘Lady or The Tiger’ and the husband from ‘Death by Scrabble’. From this stories, I hope that there are people who imitate the positive characteristics of these characters and ignore the negative ones.
