A GAME OF REVENGE AND HATRED

     Have you ever been forced to fulfill one’s selfish needs? The short story ‘Death by Scrabble’ by Charlie Fish portrays an unstable marriage relationship between a man and a woman through a jinxed word game, Scrabble. The following paragraphs show the causes of the wife acting cold towards her husband and the effects of a game filled with hatred.

     There are many causes to the wife acting cold towards her husband in the story. The first reason is because of the suspicious behavior of her husband. At a certain point in the game, the wife decided to make tea for herself and went off to switch on the kettle. The husband took this opportunity to exchange his word tile with a blank tile in the bag and quickly put it away when his wife approached the table. The wife suspected him because he acted strangely when she came near the table and she asked him if he cheated after he played a long word, ‘CHEATING’. Secondly, she was behaving coldly towards her husband because of the choice of words used by her husband. She realized that her husband hates the game from the beginning when he complained about playing Scrabble on a hot Sunday afternoon and her reaction towards him changes. The third reason is because her husband is always annoyed by her actions. This can be seen when the husband is always complaining to himself when she does anything and the wife does not like it at all.

     The game filled with hatred can have many negative effects. For example, at the end of the game the husband chokes on a word tile and dies. This is the irony of the story when the husband expresses his hatred towards his wife to an extent that he actually thought of killing her but he dies choking on a word tile instead. Another negative effect is that wife simply watches her husband choking to death. This is a part of the story where suspense is introduced and the author leaves us thinking if the wife was actually happy that her husband is dying or she was in utter shock that the whole room started shaking. In any way, this is a negative effect because if she was happy that her husband was dying then that shows she was also filled with hatred towards her husband for thinking that he cheated earlier. However, if she was in a shock due to the room moving this is because of her husband’s hatred towards her that made him play the word ‘QUAKE’ and cause the whole room to shake. The last but not least negative effect is that the trust between the husband and the wife had been destroyed. This negative effect comes into play at the middle of the game when the husband bravely cheats in the game and his wife gets a feeling of suspicion towards him.

     In conclusion, there are many causes to the wife acting cold towards her husband and negative effects of a game filled with hatred. In the future, all the newly wed couples must have a better understanding of their life partners to prevail in the future.
